Clinical Coding Abbreviations

Abbreviation Considerations

You may have configured Docman to respond to abbreviations for Clinical Coding terms, for example; using MIA as an abbreviation for Acute Myocardial Infarction.

These will be populated in the list found:

From the Homepage, select Settings, in the Settings Console menu, select Clinical Coding, and you will find Abbreviations.

Please be aware that the Abbreviations are not mapped to a code, instead they allow the system to search for the keyword, or abbreviation (i.e. MIA) that you have associated with that code (Acute Myocardial Infarction).

When you switch over to the SNOMED code set, the principle still applies. However, now the system will search for the keyword within the SNOMED coding structure, rather than READ2. And as the codes have not been mapped using the assured tool, you may find missing entries or a lack of accuracy.

If you need to reconfigure any Abbreviations in your system, this step must be completed after the previous 4 steps are complete and your system has been switch to SNOMED.

Configuring Abbreviations

From Settings, select Clinical Coding, then Abbreviations.

The system does not allow duplicate abbreviations, If you need to recreate the abbreviation with an updated SNOMED code, make a note of it, delete from the list, then follow the steps below.

To recreate any abbreviations set up in your system you must:

  1. In the Abbreviation field, type in the preferred abbreviation, as seen in documents
  2. In the Replace With field, use the Select Term button to open the Clinical Code Browser
  3. Find the term using the browser and select Confirm
  4. Select the Add to List button
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 for all abbreviated codes in your list
  6. To save your changes, select Update at the bottom of the page
